During the tremendous crisis our country is facing in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Volunteers of America Southeast is working to serve people along the Alabama-Mississippi Gulf Coast who are hungry, homeless, and fighting for survival. In response to Hurricane Katrina, Volunteers of America Southeast’s Faith-based and Community Resource Center has launched Operation “Love In Deed.” This program provides emergency medical assistance, food, water, and clothing to hurricane victims. Contributions to “Love In Deed” are still helping countless victims of the storm.

Katrina Relief and Recovery
It has been more than a year since Hurricane Katrina impacted the Gulf Coast. During this time, Volunteers of America Southeast has been working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the most devastating natural disaster in our country’s history. At the same time, we have been providing our normal services and development activities.
Our efforts have only been successful because of the many people, groups, businesses, and churches working with us. Over 9,000 volunteers have worked with us in our Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery efforts. Tens of thousands of people have been treated at our free medical clinics. Many millions of dollars of in-kind donations have been received, as well as several million in cash donations and grants. Over 80,000 people have been served with food and other necessities. More than 300 homes have been cleaned out and made habitable again. But there is still much more to be done.
After Katrina, we realized that thousands of families were desperate ... each with their own story. Each family needs help, one at a time. This effort is in collaboration with many volunteers and other faith-based organizations. The Ha Tran family’s Bayou La Batre home was flooded by the storm. They have been able to move back into their home after volunteers worked to restore and refurnish it. We have many stories like this, and we will continue to tell new stories as we help hurricane-affected families restore their lives.
If you wish to volunteer with ongoing Hurricane Katrina relief along the Gulf Coast, or to volunteer with any part of our organization, please call toll free 1-800-859-4431, or 251-300-3500.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the people we serve across the Southeast.
