Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by Christian social reformers Maud and Ballington Booth. They envisioned a spiritual movement in the United States in which devotion to God and country could be expressed through service to one's fellow man. Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, spiritually based organization providing local human service programs and opportunities for individual and community involvement.

Volunteers of America Southeast, Inc., is a chartered member of the national Volunteers of America. Volunteers of America of South Alabama began in November 1980, with three group homes, and by June, 1998, was ranked in the top five of Volunteers of America's chartered corporations.

Volunteers of America of Georgia began providing services in January, 1995. Volunteers of America of Georgia provides Supported Independent Living Services for individuals with chronic mental illness. The Supported Independent Living Program provides 24-hour supervision, support, training and transportation. These programs are funded through contracts with Community Service Boards and Regional Boards throughout the State of Georgia.

In 1999 a corporate restructuring occurred creating Volunteers of America Southeast, Inc., incorporating Greater Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.  Today the Southeast affiliate has grown to be the second largest of the 38 affiliates of Volunteers of America.

Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. and its subsidiary corporations provide services in several broad program areas. Our mission is realized through the work of over 600 staff and more than 100 community lay-people.

Now in our second century of service, Volunteers of America is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive human services organizations, touching the lives of nearly 1.8 million people each year in communities across the United States. Planning for the next 100 years, Volunteers of America will continue to prove that “there are no limits to caring.”
